(Please note that party availability is subject to the the studio’s class/workshop program schedule and public events). Free Lunch Studios Lecture Series

From newspaper strips to superhero comic books, from webcomics to manga, the medium of comics and graphic novels has exploded in the last decade, and gained an acceptance both in the mainstream reading public and in educational environments.

Matt Ryan and Steve Kanaras, of Free Lunch Comics are proud to introduce you to their series of lectures covering all phases of the creation of comics and graphic novels. Lectures include Comic Construction, a day in the life of comic creation (grades K - 12), Comic Instruction, a detailed lecture on incorporating comics into the classroom (professional development, and Mad Science Cartooning, a drawing animals experience with a creative twist (grades 1 - 4).

Operating from the Free Lunch Dept. in the CES Design Studios offices in Granby, CT, Matt and Steve have taught hundreds of people, children and adults alike, the skills required to create comics as well as the theories and techniques behind this growing and exciting medium. In addition to running classes and workshops at the Free Lunch Studios themselves, the creators travel to many venues throughout the year, bringing their lectures to schools, libraries, and after-school programs throughout the area. They offer a variety of program levels to meet your needs and budget, from one on one tutoring up through schoolwide assemblies! Proud participants in the Hartford Performs programming.

Scouts Artists Badge Lectures

Matt Ryan is an experienced lecturer that runs a workshop with a specific focus for your scout to attain their artist's badge. What child would not want to come to a working art studio that is filled with comics, cartoons and illustration? All sessions include: a drawing experience, examples for portfolio, various media experience, elements of design, working from reference and more of the requirements set forth by these organizations.
